Surangana Sankriti Chakra

Surangana Sanskriti Chakra has the motive to continue the old and traditional cultural cycle. This department provides training in music, dance, theater, recitation, drawing, embroidery, and various subjects to the students of the school and interested students of the area.

The cultural school has gained popularity and pride by participating in various programs organized by local schools, clubs, institutions, public mela (fairs), festivals, and programs for a long time. The school has also taken part in various state-level cultural programs organized by government and non-government sectors.

Many students are benefiting from the provision of the exam system and accompanying papers through Praitiya Sangeet Vidyavihar and Surabhavati Lakshit Kala Kendra for their subject-wise assessment along with an instructor.

In this organization, 30 artists have been granted a folk artist allowance by the Department of Folk Culture of the West Bengal Government, and they have actively participated in various social and cultural development programs organized by the government. For years, the school has had the opportunity to participate in government events, festivals, and social events organized at the Panchayat and state levels.

The cultural school observes various celebrations such as Basant Utsav, New Year, Independence Day, Rakhi Bandhan Festival, etc. It also actively takes part in protecting the integrity of communal harmony in the country, education, health promotion, and awareness programs.

The school provides support in upholding the cultural practices of the people belonging to tribal communities of the area and helps in the restoration of endangered folk culture by conducting training/workshops on Panta Nach, Bhuwang Santhal Dance, Changa Dance, Sakhi Dance, Mohara Dance, Baha Dance, and Dong Dance of the Santhals. It also conducts workshops for music enthusiasts to train them in instruments such as madal, dhamsha, dhol, ghonta, ghagra, etc.

  • Panta Nach: Panta means “line.” In this dance, boys and girls align side by side, holding each other’s waists. This dance symbolizes unity and togetherness between tribal communities.
  • Bhuwang Dance: Bhuwang means “law.” This dance is performed especially by males. It is like worshipping goddesses such as Durga, Santoshi Ma, etc.
  • Karam Nach: This dance symbolizes work. Before tribal people go for a hunt, they perform this dance while holding their bows.
  • Adivasi Danta Nach: This dance is performed against any enemy while holding a danta (sword or weapon) in hand.
  • Chhau Dance: The dance is a stylized mock battle in which two groups of dancers, armed with swords and shields, alternate between attacking and defending themselves with vigorous movements and elegant stances.
  • Mohara Dance: This dance is performed while wearing masks.
  • Changa Dance: This is performed especially by the Lodha community, who hold a dapli (hand drum).
