After witnessing first-hand the challenges children face on a day-to-day basis, Puspita Sahu and her family were inspired to make a difference.  In 1993, Puspita Sahu founded Gohaldiha Jati Upajati Blue Bird Women’s Welfare Center (GJUBBWWC), a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing Hope, Education, Love, and Protection to children and empowering vulnerable communities.  

GJUBBWWC delivers educational and community development across Jhargram District, West Bengal, with a long-term vision of expanding its impact throughout the region. The organization believes that every child, regardless of their background, deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and build a brighter future.

The Journey of Our Founder

Mrs Puspita Sahu began her career on 16 January 1975 when she joined Nayagram Thana Balika Vidyapith, a non-government girl’s school as Headmistress. From her very first days, she witnessed the harsh realities affecting children and families in the region. Extreme poverty, widespread illiteracy and social inequality prevented many children-especially girls – from accessing education.

She identified several critical challenges facing the community:

• Severe poverty among families, resulting in school dropout rates.
• Very low literacy levels across the Nayagram region.
• Fewer than 10% of girls attended school.
• High unemployment and limited livelihood opportunities.
• Alcohol abuse affecting families and community well-being.

Mrs. Sahu firmly believed that educating and empowering women is the foundation of social transformation. Guided by this vision, she worked tirelessly to improve educational opportunities for girls.

Her first major achievement came in 1978, when she successfully secured government affiliation for Nayagram Thana Balika Vidyapith, inititally up to Class VIII and, through her continues efforts, later extended the affiliation up to Class XII. Recognising that many girls were still unable to continue their education due to distance and poverty, she championed the establishment of a residential girls’ hostel. Her perseverance and dedication ultimately led to the creation of the fist residential girls’ school of its kind in Nayagram, providing education and accommodation for around 1,000 girls and transforming educational opportunities for generations of young women in the region.

After years of determination and collaboration with the Government, her vision became reality in 1981 with the establishment of the first residential girls’ school in Nayagram, providing accommodation and education for around 1,000 girls. This landmark achievement transformed education opportunities for countless young women across the reigion.

Building on decades of grassroots experience and community service, Late Mrs Puspita Sahu founded Gohaldiha Jati Upajati Blue Bird Women’s Welfare Centre in 1993 to extend her mission beyond education. Since then, the organization has worked tirelessly to support children from tribal and economically disadvantaged communities through quality education, health initiatives, child welfare programmes, women’s empowerment, and community development.

Mrs. Puspita Sahu dedicated nearly five decades of her life to creating opportunities where none existed,. Her compassion, determination, and unwavering commitment transformed the lives of thousands of children and families. Although she is no longer with us, her vision and values continue to guide GJUBBWWC. Her legacy lives on through the organization she founded and through every child who receives education, care, hope, and the opportunity for a better future.
